Whenever we talk about offroading or 4X4 cars, Mahindra Thar is the first car that pops into our mind without a doubt. It has become more of a legendary icon in India with its journey throughout the years with the generation updates. It is India’s top-selling offroader with an immensely vast fan following across the country.

After the latest generation launched now, Thar comes with the latest features. It comes with 2 engines, a 2-litre turbo-charged mStallion petrol engine making 150hp & 320Nm torque. In comparison, the 2.2-litre diesel mHawk diesel engine churns out 130hp & 300Nm torque. It is available with both 6-speed manual/automatic transmissions with a fuel efficiency of upto 15kmpl. It has a price range from ₹13.53-16.03 lakhs ex-showroom throughout AX(O) & LX variants.

Force Gurkha

Gurkha is the direct competitor of Thar and also a good 4X4 car in the segment. While its previous generation might not have been prevalent, we can still spot them around. It is a reliable car with excellent offroad capabilities and the only offroader to come with a snorkel as standard. Force also offers many other offroading accessories to customise the Gurkha as you want.

It comes with a single engine option, a 2.6-litre diesel engine churning out 90hp & 250Nm torque. Although as compared to the previous generation, it gets new features such as a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system supporting Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and a tyre pressure monitoring system. While it is still a viable option but still has a slight commercial feel to it. It starts from ₹14.49 lakhs ex-showroom.

Isuzu D Max 

This was among the first available 4X4 cars in India and has been around for a while. It might be known for sparking the pick-up truck culture in India and will be competing with the Toyota Hilux now. You might have come across this truck on the outskirts while any road trips to hill stations or even during rallies.

The D Max comes with a 1.9-litre diesel engine that churns out 163hp & 360Nm torque. It comes with a 6-speed manual/automatic transmission along with both 4X2 & 4X4 drivetrains. Toyota Hilux

This is the only direct competitor of the above-mentioned pick-up truck from Isuzu. Toyota recently launched this pick-up truck. It shares powertrains & features from Innova Crysta & Fortuner. It has a premium styling along with a bulky road appeal with Toyota’s reliability and a standard 4X4 drivetrain. 

Hilux is powered by a 2.8-litre turbocharged diesel engine making 204hp & 420Nm torque. It comes with a standard 6-speed transmission, and the automatic transmission makes 80Nm more. Deliveries for this pick-up truck are already underway, and it comes with features such as an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system & cruise control. It has a heft price tag from ₹33.99-36.80 lakhs ex-showroom.

Jeep Compass Trailhawk

Compass is Jeep’s top-performing candidate in India. It is a capable SUV with a standard 4-wheel drive along with modified bumpers for better approach & departure angles. The American manufacturer has also launched the 7-seater version of the Compass.

It is powered by the same 2-litre diesel engine churning out 173hp & 350Nm torque mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission. It has a promising road presence with an appealing exterior. It comes with a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system with a digital instrument cluster and a 9-speaker layout. It has a price of ₹30.97 lakhs ex-showroom.

Toyota Fortuner

Another candidate from Toyota with a 4X4 drivetrain offered with the higher variants. It is one of the most comfortable & loved SUVs in India with a massive journey throughout its generation updates. It is sold in three variants: Fortuner, Legender, and a sporty GR-S variant.

It has two engine options with the same petrol engine as the Innova Crysta stated above. But the 2.8-litre turbo-diesel churns out 204hp & 500Nm torque. It offers fuel efficiency of around 8-10kmpl for both powertrains. It gets the 4X4 drivetrain with higher variants such as the GR-S. It has a price range from ₹31.79-48.43 lakhs ex-showroom.

 

MG Gloster

The last 4X4 car on our list is an SUV from MG. Gloster is another premium SUV like the above-mentioned Fortuner. It is available in both 6 & 7-seater configurations with two engine options. The 2-litre turbo makes 163hp &375Nm torque, and a 2-litre twin-turbo diesel churning 218hp & 480Nm torque. Both engines are mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. 

It is equipped with ADAS features such as adaptive cruise control, semi-parallel park-assist, lane keep assist & AEM braking. It has a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with a 12-way adjustable driver’s seat with memory function. It gets the 4X4 drivetrain only with the twin-turbo diesel variant.
