Mercedes Benz India launched the new S-Class in the Indian market a couple of months ago but that one was a CBU import. Today, the German marque drives the CKD model of the S-Class that is a lot more affordable. Just like the current model, it also comes powered with both petrol and diesel engine options. Mercedes S-Class CKD has been launched in two variants – S350d at Rs 1.57 crore and S450 at Rs 1.62 crore ex-showroom.
Mercedes S-Class CKD – What are the changes over the CBU model?
The CBU model of the S-Class was launched in the launch edition AMG line with all the bells and whistles. The CKD model has got some cuts in terms of features in favour of affordability. In terms of features, the CKD model comes packed with a 12.8-inch OLED touchscreen infotainment system, freestanding virtual display for the driver, massage seats with electric adjustment, 64-colour ambient lighting, Burmester 3D sound and a lot more.
However, some features like the rear-wheel steering, Burmester 4D sound etc have been missed out on the CKD model which were on offer with the CBU spec variants.
Mercedes S-Class CKD – Engine options
Mechanically, the S-Class CKD is very similar to the CBU model with the same powertrain options. The changes lie with the power and torque output of the 3.0-litre straight-six diesel engine. Even though it’s the same engine, the power and torque output stands at 286Hp and 600 Nm as opposed to S400d’s 330Hp and 700 Nm. The 3.0-litre straight-six petrol engine, however, is unchanged with 367Hp and 500 Nm of torque. Both the engines come mated to a 9-speed automatic gearbox and all-wheel-drive as standard.
Mercedes S-Class CKD – Prices and Rivals
The Mercedes S-Class CKD has been priced from Rs 1.57 crore. If we recall, the S-Class launch edition was priced from Rs 2.17 crore for the S400d and 2.19 crore for the S400 variants. If we draw a comparison, you are saving Rs 60 lakh and Rs 55 lakh with the CKD model when compared to the respective variants of the CBU launch edition. When it comes to rivals, the S-Class takes on the likes of the BMW 7-Series and Audi A8L.
