Q1. How do Jelly Belly air fresheners work?

Ans. Jelly Belly air fresheners work due to the combined action of a gelling agent, a solvent, and a liquid base together with the perfume or scent. The base of the gel is gelatine which is the main ingredient in the air freshener and acts as a holder for the essential oil (the scent). When the gel is set, the particles of the essential oil lay suspended in it. As the gel is volatile, it evaporates and releases the particles of the essential oils into the air. What’s left behind is a clean, fresh scent.

Q2. How do you make Smelly Jelly air fresheners?

Ans. In a small cooking pot, add gelatine to 1 cup of water and allow to settle. After about ten minutes, the gel will begin to dissolve. Place the cooking pot over medium heat and stir or whisk the mixture. Remove the pot from the heat and let it cool for five minutes. Transfer the mixture into a measuring cup. Add potassium sorbate, half a cup of water, and half a cup of vodka. Add food colouring and mix. Pour the mixture into jars and add the required essential oils and whisk. Place in a refrigerator for three hours. After this, the Smelly Jelly air freshener is ready to use.

Ans. Smelly Jellies have the advantage of being gel based as they last long compared to room freshener sprays and diffusers. The gelling agent present in Smelly Jellies slows down the evaporation of the essential oil (the scent) allowing the gel scent to last for a long time. Smelly Jellies fragrance can last for weeks without needing a refresh.
