The Indian automotive market is crowded with SUV offerings and the year 2021 has a lot to offer in the coming months. We have seen back to back unveils of the Mahindra XUV700, Volkswagen Taigun, MG Astor and Force Gurkha. Here is the list of top upcoming SUV cars in India 2021 with their tentative launch date and price range estimates.
Tata Punch
Tata Punch is the upcoming Micro-SUV from the Indian carmaker and the unofficial bookings have already opened. It was first showcased at the 2020 Auto Expo and the production version is very similar to the HBX concept. Tata will position the Punch below the Nexon and it’s expected to start from Rs 5 lakh whereas the top variant could cost 8 lakh ex-showroom. Hence, it falls in the upcoming SUV cars in India 2021 under 15 lakhs.
Tata Punch will only come powered with a 1.2-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine that is shared with the Tiago and the Altroz. However, Tata could also offer the Punch with a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine seen with the Altroz i-Turbo. It will offer features like a semi-digital instrument cluster, freestanding infotainment system, cruise control, ESP based terrain modes and more. Tata could launch the Punch in late September.

Volkswagen Taigun
Volkswagen Taigun is the second offering out of the giant’s India 2.0 plan. It shares its underpinnings and engine options with the Kushaq and will go on sale later this month. Volkswagen Taigun will come powered with 115Hp 1.0 TSI and 150Hp 1.5 TSI with 6-speed AT and 7-speed DSG respectively. Like every other VW group offering in India, the Taigun will also lack a diesel engine option.
Volkswagen Taigun will offer features like a digital cockpit, 10-inch infotainment system with wireless Android Auto and Apple Car Play, six airbags, paddle shifters etc. The Taigun will go head-on with the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos. Volkswagen will launch the Taigun in India on September 23rd. Volkswagen is expected to price the Taigun from Rs 10.8 lakh to 17.5 lakh ex-showroom.

MG Astor
MG Astor is the ICE counterpart of the ZS EV and it is going to launch next month. MG first showcased the Astor at the 2020 Auto Expo in the Trophy trim and that will be continued to the launch model as well. In addition to that, the Astor has also gained Level-2 ADAS and personal Ai voice assistant. It is built on the CAAP philosophy and gets a ton of connectivity features.
MG Astor will come powered with two petrol engines - 110Hp 1.5L naturally aspirated petrol and 140Hp 1.3L T-GDI petrol. While the former one will be offered with an 8-step CVT and manual, the latter petrol engine will only be offered with a 6-speed AT. MG is expected to price the Astor from Rs 9.99 lakh to Rs 16.99 lakh ex-showroom.

Force Gurkha
Force Motors is coming up with the new Gurkha on September 27th. It was first showcased at the 2020 Auto Expo in a 3-door version whereas a 5-door version could get launched at a later date. The new Gurkha is based on the new body-on-frame chassis and it also gets a new BS6 diesel engine.
Staying true to its offroad credentials, the new Gurkha gets independent front suspension, rigid rear axle, lockable front and rear differentials and more. Its 2.6L diesel engine churns out 91Hp and 250 Nm of torque, mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. Force could price the Gurkha from Rs 9 lakh ex-showroom and it will go against the likes of the Mahindra Thar.

Mahindra XUV700
Mahindra shook up the SUV space entirely with the introductory prices of the XUV700 that start from Rs 11.99 lakh. However, Mahindra is yet to announce the detailed variant price breakup as the launch is slated for October 2. It will be offered with segment-best features including Level-1 ADAS.
Talking about the engine options, Mahindra will offer the XUV700 with two engine options - 200Hp 2.0L T-GDI petrol and 155Hp/185Hp 2.2-litre diesel. Both the engine options will come mated to 6-speed AT and 6-speed manual whereas the Diesel AT will also be offered with AWD. Mahindra XUV700 range could go till 22 lakh ex-showroom.

Volkswagen Tiguan
Volkswagen India had launched the Tiguan Allspace last year but it was a CBU import. The German giant is now coming up with the Tiguan 5-seater and it will be locally assembled. The earlier Tiguan was powered with a 2.0L TDI but the 2021 Tiguan will come powered with a 2.0L TSI and 4-Motion AWD.
Volkswagen could launch the Tiguan later this year and it will be the same ongoing international model. Part of the package will be sleeker looking LED headlights and taillights and tweaked interiors. The Tiguan will take on the likes of the Jeep Compass and Citroen C5 Aircross. Volkswagen could price the Tiguan from Rs 29.99 lakh ex-showroom.

Skoda Kodiaq
Skoda Kodiaq is the Czech sibling of the Tiguan Allspace but unlike it, the Kodaiq will be locally assembled. Skoda showcased the Kodiaq petrol at the 2020 Auto Expo but that was the pre-facelifted model. However, Skoda revealed the Kodaiq facelift earlier this year and the facelifted model will be launched in India too.
It will also come powered with the same 2.0L TSI petrol engine mated to a 7-speed DSG. Skoda could also offer AWD with the Kodiaq. Skoda is expected to launch the Kodiaq later this year and it will take on the likes of the upcoming Jeep Meridian, Toyota Fortuner and MG Gloster.
